Have taken to a diesel injector and turbo specialist and they don't think it's injectors or pump, but as usual cant be sure until it's pulled apart. I'm trying to find a failure mode of something that expains my symptoms. My gut feeling is an electrical issue related to pump. All sensors, including those in pump seem ok though.

Am trying to figure it out myself now. Do not know if this helps but mentions the Zexel pump. I am not a mechanic so it’s all greek to me. I got this link from the Pajero forum some time ago. It’s for the NM NP Montero but covers our V6 petrol and 4M41 diesel engines.

There is evidence that damage occurs to the injector pump when the fuel pressure supplied by the lift pump is too low.
This happens because the diesel is the only form of cooling and lubrication in the injector pump. The fix was to replace the lift pump with a different one that pumped at a higher pressure. I dont know if our pumps have the same issue but it is worth keeping in mind anyway. Does anyone know what fuel pressure is supplied to our injector pumps, or have a mut or another way to find out? I think it would be interesting to know to compare ours with the dodge in the link above.
